The noise and press of historical and medieval battlefields drown out the seem of drums, fifes, or horns: the regular, and later flag, was a ready image to maintain troopers from scattering.  Since the flags and requirements were ordinarily hooked up to very long poles, they could be noticed by several in the entrance ranks, and these would dir
